That is the real constraint, and it is the one that gets left out of an online quote. The graphic is the easy part. The hard part is a schedule that works around clinic hours, a route that stays clear while a walkway is being filmed, a material that is low-odor and low-dust because the room next door is occupied, and a crew that has done it in that kind of building before.

We measure the actual surface, specify the material to it in writing before anything is quoted, and install it ourselves. There is no hand-off in the middle for responsibility to get lost in.

A little over three years of graphics work across eight of the health system's locations, including the main Akron campus. The pieces have almost nothing in common as materials — wall murals, architectural glass, perforated window film, a backlit stadium panel, marine vinyl, brick-surface graphics, fabric and rigid signage. What they have in common is that one company specified, produced and installed all of it, on a schedule set by a working hospital.

The clearest example is the pair of elevated pedestrian bridges on the main Akron campus. Double-sided vision perforated film went the length of the glazing to announce the new Radiology Department construction. Two decisions made that job work:

It went on the interior face of the glass, on purpose. An elevated glazed walkway in Northeast Ohio takes driven snow, freeze-thaw and road salt in the air. Exterior-applied perf on that elevation degrades in a season or two, and replacing it means getting equipment to the outside of a bridge over a live campus. Inside, the film is protected completely.
An optically clear overlaminate went over it. Perforated film is full of holes, and on an interior application every hole sits at hand height for everyone walking past. Bare perf goes grubby fast and a cloth catches the perforation edges. The laminate seals the holes on the viewing side so the surface wipes clean like glass. On an interior installation in a public building that is not an upgrade, it is the specification.

The bridges stayed open the entire time. Installation ran panel by panel with a clear route always available.

Three things that decide whether an Akron job goes well

The surface, not the artwork. A block wall needs a high-grip film made for texture, not standard wall vinyl, or it bubbles and lifts within a season. Brick needs a different material again. We name the substrate on the proof.
