Pedestrian Bridge Window Perf & Graphics in Akron, OH
Two elevated walkways, thousands of people underneath them every day, and a construction project that needed explaining before it opened.
Perforated window film turned the glass on a pair of pedestrian bridges at Akron Children's Hospital's main Akron campus into a campaign surface — without taking the daylight out of the walkway or the view from inside it.

Perforated film applied to the interior face of the bridge glazing, then overlaid with an optically clear laminate.
Why perf instead of a printed graphic
Perforated window film is printed vinyl with a regular pattern of holes punched through it. From outside it reads as a solid image. From inside it behaves like a tinted window — you can see straight through it.
That one property is what makes it right for a walkway. A solid graphic on a bridge would turn a bright glass crossing into a tunnel. Perf lets the people walking through keep the view and the daylight, while everyone underneath sees a full-coverage graphic.
It also cuts glare and some solar heat, which on a south-facing elevated walkway is not a small thing.
The laminate is the whole job
Here is the part that separates a perf installation that lasts from one that does not.
Perforated film has thousands of holes in it. Every hole is a place for dirt, moisture and fingerprints to collect, and on interior-applied film every hole is at hand height for anyone walking past. Left bare, the film goes grubby fast and cleaning it is close to impossible — a cloth catches the perforation edges.
An optically clear overlaminate seals the holes on the viewing side. The graphic still reads as perf from outside, but the surface people touch is smooth and wipeable. On an interior-applied installation in a public building this is not an upgrade, it is the specification.

Inside the glass, on purpose
Perf is normally an exterior product. On this job it went on the inside face, deliberately.
An elevated glazed walkway in Northeast Ohio takes everything the winter has — driven snow, freeze-thaw, road salt in the air. Exterior-applied perf on that elevation would have degraded in a season or two, and replacing it means getting equipment to the outside of a bridge over a live campus.
Inside, the film is protected completely. The trade-off is that the graphic is read through the glass, which softens it slightly, and that the artwork has to be prepared for that. Worth it, every time, on a surface that hard to reach.
Working in an occupied building
A hospital bridge does not close because a graphic is going up. Neither does a school corridor or an office lobby.
Installation ran panel by panel with the walkway in use, sequenced so there was always a clear route through. That is normal for our healthcare and institutional work: the constraint is almost never the graphic, it is the schedule of the building around it. Tell us how the space is used and we will plan the install around it rather than asking you to plan around us.
Common questions
Can you see through window perf from inside?
Yes. From inside it reads like a tinted window. From outside it reads as a solid graphic. That asymmetry is the whole point of the material.
How long does perforated film last?
Three to five years exterior-applied in Ohio weather with a laminate. Interior-applied, considerably longer, because nothing weathers it.
Does it need special cleaning?
With an optically clear laminate, no — wipe it like glass. Without one, perf traps dirt in the perforations and is difficult to clean, which is why we specify the laminate.
Will it come off the glass cleanly?
Yes. Glass is the most forgiving surface there is for film removal.
Can it go on curved or sloped glazing?
Generally yes, with panel planning. Send photographs of the elevation and we will tell you before quoting rather than after.
