What makes a backlit scoreboard graphic different from a normal banner?

A backlit graphic is lit from behind rather than from the front. It is printed at a higher ink density on material that diffuses light evenly, so it still reads when the scoreboard is lit at night. A standard graphic lit from behind goes washed out and patchy. The Copley High School scoreboard was printed on backlit self-adhesive vinyl and applied to acrylic panels, finished at 46 inches high by 310 inches wide.

Can a sponsor pay for a school scoreboard graphic?

Commonly, yes. A scoreboard panel is one of the most straightforward sponsorship assets a school district owns, and the sponsoring business gets the most-photographed signage on the property. The Copley High School and Nordonia High School scoreboards were both sponsored by Akron Children's Hospital.

Can you install graphics printed by another supplier?

Yes. Installation and project management is offered on its own, including on graphics printed elsewhere. Sending the specification before printing avoids most install problems, which usually come from material choices made earlier.

Scoreboard Graphics & Custom Signs for Copley, Ohio

DG Creativ is a custom graphics, signage and installation company based in Stow, Ohio. We work across Northeast Ohio, and one of the projects we are best known for sits about twenty minutes west of us — the scoreboard at Copley High School.

Backlit is a different product, and the Copley scoreboard is the example

A scoreboard lit from behind is not a banner with a light on it. A standard graphic is printed to be seen with light falling on the front of it. Put that same graphic over a light box and the ink that looked solid in daylight goes transparent, and you get a washed-out, patchy panel that nobody can read from the far bleachers.

Backlit work is printed at higher ink density on material chosen to diffuse light evenly from behind. It costs more per square foot than a standard banner. It is also the entire difference between a scoreboard that reads at night and one that does not.

The project: Copley High School, for Akron Children's Hospital

Akron Children's Hospital sponsored the scoreboard at Copley High School and brought us in to produce and install the graphics. The scoreboard needed them mounted onto acrylic panels with full backlighting behind them, which ruled out a conventional banner.

Finished size 46 inches high by 310 inches wide — just under 26 feet across.

We handled it alongside a second scoreboard for Akron Children's at Nordonia High School in Macedonia, where a fifteen-year-old frame the original manufacturer no longer supported had to come out before a new 145 by 255 inch backlit graphic went in. Read the full scoreboard write-up.

How a job runs

Measure. We come out and measure the actual frame, wall, window or vehicle. On-site measurement across Northeast Ohio is free. For a scoreboard it is worth the visit, because the old panel has stretched and is no longer the size it started at.
Specify. Surface and lighting decide the material. Backlit, front-lit, block wall, glass and fleet vinyl are four different products.
Proof. You approve artwork at size, with the substrate and finish named on the proof.
Install. Done by us. Scoreboard work usually needs a lift and is not a job for maintenance staff on a ladder.

How do we know if our scoreboard is backlit?
If the panel glows from within when the lights are on, it is backlit. If you are not sure, tell us the make of the scoreboard and we will work it out before anything is quoted.

How long does a stadium graphic last in Ohio?
Several seasons. Constant wind and all-day direct sun shorten it, and the usual failure point is the attachment hardware rather than the print — which is why hemming, grommet spacing and reinforced corners matter more than they sound like they should.

Can you install graphics we bought somewhere else?
Yes. Installation and project management is offered on its own, including on graphics printed by another supplier. It is worth sending us the specification before it is printed — most install problems are material choices made weeks earlier.
