Scoreboard Banner Retrofit When the Original System Is No Longer Supported
Your scoreboard works. The banner system behind it does not. That is a more common problem than it sounds, and it usually surfaces at the worst possible moment.
A scoreboard is built to last decades. The company that built it is not. When a manufacturer closes or drops a product line, the board keeps working — it lights, it keeps score, it has years left — but the proprietary system that held its banner quietly stops being supported. No parts. No spares. Nothing equivalent to order.
Nobody notices while the grips are holding. Then there is a storm, several let go at once, the panel tears, and suddenly it is Sunday night, the first home game is Friday, and there is no manufacturer to call.
A retrofit at Nordonia High School in Macedonia, after a windstorm took out the original grips.
What we do about it
We stop trying to source a dead part and replace the attachment system instead.
CreativStretch is our own tensioned banner frame. It mounts around the existing banner opening and carries the graphic on its own hardware, so the panel no longer depends on anything the original manufacturer supplied. The board stays. The frame is new. The graphic is built to the frame.
- We measure the opening, not the old banner. Every banner stretches, so the one you took down is the wrong reference. On a retrofit this matters more than usual, because the frame has to fit the structure as it actually is.
- The frame is fitted around the opening, set and squared on site — which is where the surprises live, because old scoreboards are rarely as square as their drawings.
- A new banner is built to that frame, hemmed, grommeted to the frame's spacing and tensioned flat.
- We install it, usually from a lift. Scoreboard work is not a job for maintenance staff on a ladder.
The attachment is a spring into a grommet. It is meant to be simple, because somebody else will be doing it next time.
It costs more up front. Here is the honest trade.
A retrofit costs more than a replacement panel, because you are buying hardware as well as a graphic. We would rather say that plainly than have it arrive in a quote.
What you are buying is the last time this is difficult. After the frame is on:
- Future graphics hook on at the grommets. That is the entire operation.
- You do not need us to do it. Someone who has never hung a banner can manage it in an afternoon.
- A sponsor change stops being a project. Which matters, because a scoreboard panel is one of the most straightforward sponsorship assets a district owns — and sponsors rotate.
- No parts dependency, ever again. The frame is ours and it stays supported.
If your scoreboard graphic has not changed in years because changing it is a hassle, that hassle is the thing being removed.
When a retrofit is the right call, and when it is not
| A retrofit makes sense | A straight replacement is fine |
|---|---|
| The original banner system is no longer supported | The original system works and parts are available |
| Grips, clips or channels have failed or gone brittle | The attachment hardware is sound |
| You expect to change the graphic for sponsors or a rebrand | The graphic will sit for its full life |
| The opening has been modified, or the hardware is a mix of eras | Everything matches and holds tension |
If you are not sure which you have, send a photo of the scoreboard and one of the banner edge. That is usually enough for us to tell you — and if a replacement panel is all you need, we will say so.
Backlit scoreboards
If your board is lit from behind, say so early. A backlit panel is a different print at higher ink density on light-diffusing material, and a frame retrofit on a backlit opening has to be set so the hardware does not cast a shadow line across the face.
Fluorescent-lit boards need particular care. The tubes sit at fixed positions behind the panel, so the material has to diffuse evenly or you see them through the graphic. It is routine work, but it is not the same job as a front-lit board.
Common questions
How quickly can this happen? Tell us the game date. The measurement visit has to happen first, and on-site measurement across Northeast Ohio is free.
Do we have to replace the whole scoreboard? Almost never. If the board lights and keeps score, the board is fine. It is the banner system that has aged out.
Can a sponsor pay for it? Commonly, yes. A scoreboard panel is the most-photographed signage on the property, and the retrofit makes every future sponsor change cheap — which is an easier conversation than an annual reprint.
What if our scoreboard maker is still in business? Then start with them. If the parts are available and the system works, you do not need us for this.
